Using the media to promote pit bulls in a positive light!
Throughout the United States and all over the world dog breeds are being restricted, banned, and even killed through discriminatory type legislation. Called BSL (Breed Specific Legislation), it aims to address the vicious dog issue by punishing the breed instead of the irresponsible owner. Various breeds including: pit bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinchers, German Shepherds, American Bulldogs, and Bull Terriers have been singled out.
“Pit bulls” have been the primary target of this legislation, which has been around since the mid 1980’s. The term “pit bull” does not refer to a specific breed but is a generic term usually used to refer to three breeds that are closely related: the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), the American Staffordshire Terrier (AM Staff), and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffy). “Pit bull type dog” is a loosely defined term that can refer to numerous breeds or can refer to the physical traits of a particular dog.
My wife and I, as owners of a pit bull, were faced with BSL in our community in January of 2006. As dedicated owners of pit bulls since 1990, we decided we could not just stand by and let this injustice unfold before us. Thankfully, there were numerous other people in our community who felt the same way. While others were contacting city council members and organizing groups to fight the BSL, we decide to find our own little niche of promoting a positive image of the pit bull terrier. I wrote an article entitled “A Fall from Grace: The Story of the Pit Bull”, which was published in a four part series in an insert of the Denver Post . The positive image story attracted the attention of the local media and provided a means for us to further expand on the often-misunderstood side of the pit bull terrier. We brought our dog Petey to city hall to give people a chance to meet a wonderful pit bull.
It’s our belief that the vast major of people are mislead into believing outright lies and myths created around the pit bull. This web site was designed to inform the public of the positive side of pit bulls and hopefully will serve to educate people on their wonderful qualities. We sincerely hope that you enjoy the site.
Thank You,
Gerard & Alex Spicer
